Celebrate! a new era of blogging is dawning on the internet!
Ok, not really, this is just my new blog.
So, what is this place? This is a blog to replace my old semi-blog which I used to keep at martindevans.googlepages.com, that one annoyed me because:
1) No actual blogging capability - that's a bit annoying, all the formatting of dates etc was done by hand
2) No comments - it's nice to get feedback,
especially on a programming blog where there is *always* a better solution
3) Googlepages is being closed, so I need somewhere new anyway
4) Googlepages uses a template system, or I could upload my own pages but they're still boring old pages, no shiny new pages driven by clever server side stuff (which this one is)
So, this new place is build entirely by me, I'm a programmer and I wanted to learn google appengine, what better way than writing some blogging software? This site is written with python scripts behind the scenes, they're mostly used to power the blogging and the message board (at this point the message board looks a bit rubbish, I'll be working on that after blogging is working). The python generates xhtml, which is then styled with CSS. Nowhere uses javascript yet, but that's just because I haven't needed it yet, I'm sure it will later ;)
So, currently this site offers several services:
1) Blogging - I can make new blog posts from a secure admin page available to only my user. Anyone can post comments on the blog.
2) Metaserver - This is a different service, however it's still linked too and potentially could be quite useful, it's not being used by any games at the moment however I fully intend to use it next time I make a game that requires a server list
3) code repository - this will be stuff that I release, some open source some closed.
Since this is the blog, I guess I'd better explain what this blog is actually *about*.
This is primarily a programming blog, There will be a lot on random programming projects of mine - written (almost always) with C# and XNA. Also, I'm attempting to build a team for game development at university, these games would be built for publishing - if that happens then there will be development journals here on those games from me, and hopefully from the other guys.
Finally, this site is obviously under development, even this blog entry is largely a piece of test data to see if the blogging system works properly. If you see any errors in firefox or chrome, then please email me on martindevans@gmail.com, I know that the site looks really bad in internet explorer at the moment, and I'll look into fixing that - any tips on that would also be appreciated :)
Martin :)
